How to help out a new mum

Becoming a mother for the first time is an experience unlike any other, and unless you have been through it all before, it can be hard to know how to support the women in your life as they navigate the path. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the best things you can do to help are often the simplest and most obvious, so there’s no need to go overboard brainstorming.

Think practically

Unless you have already splashed your cash on a baby shower gift, the days following the birth of a new baby are a great time for a thoughtful gift, if you’re so inclined. This is the perfect time to invest in something practical that will make the transition into motherhood that little bit smoother – think feeding covers, breast pads, or even a sunscreen applicator to help protect baby’s tender skin, all of which can be found in the Smylyn Gift Pack. At the end of the day, almost anything goes, although you should think twice about noisy toys that threaten to ruin precious nap time.

Give your time

Amongst all new parents, sleep deprivation is a common factor, and a night off can be a lifesaver. Whether the mother you know needs a night out with her partner or just a few extra hours to sleep, a close, trusted friend is the perfect person to call when a babysitter is in order. This is a great idea if you are a mother yourself with the practical experience to handle any minor situations that might come up, although with any luck, the baby will spend much of your visit asleep. If you do go down this road, just be prepared – not every baby sleeps soundly, and you may not get to watch much of your latest Netflix find.

Pick up the phone

A newborn typically creates days or even weeks of excitement amongst family and friends, so much so that it might even have a negative effect on the new family unit. The problem is that things can get quite lonely after baby is born and the mother may be at home alone for extended periods of time. Becoming part of the solution is as simple as picking up the phone, letting her know that you’re thinking of her, and asking if there’s anything she needs. Your companionship is one of the best gifts you can give.

It’s easy to be a positive force for the women in your life as they make that leap into motherhood. All you need to do is be sensitive to the changes they are going through and be there when they do eventually come up for air – that is a truly invaluable gift.
